Requirements of a Balance Transfer
You can request a St.George balance transfer if it meets the following criteria:
- The transferred balance is from another issuer, transfers cannot be made between different St.George cards
- The credit card has been issued in Australia
- The transfer amount is in excess of $500
- The transfer amount is less than 95% of your available credit limit
- Your credit file and card account are in good shape
How to request a balance transfer
A St.George balance transfer can be requested by new and existing customers of the bank. New customers can include a balance transfer request in the application form for a new St.George credit card. The introductory period then starts from the day the account is opened, and the promotional rate is applied to the transferred balance. If any balance remains outstanding at the end of this period it accrues interest at the normal rate for that credit card, i.e. at the interest rate applied to purchases.
Existing customers of St.George bank also have the option of requesting balance transfers. They can make as many transfer requests as they wish as long the minimum requirements are met. It is important to note that if the existing St.George card had any interest free days, they will be disabled while a balance transfer offer is in effect. Interest free days are only available when the full amount is repaid every statement cycle. So for the duration of a balance transfer offer these cards will no longer offer interest free days on purchases.
St.George balance transfer for new credit cards can take up to 14 days to be processed. The balance is transferred only after the new card is activated and all identity checks are completed. If you wish to close your credit card accounts from which you have transferred the balance away, you need to do so manually by getting in contact with the card issuer.
