The “big four” banks are widely known for their tempting credit card deals. The vast range of quality cards would explain why they are so successful in Australia. Which of the “big four” offers the best credit card deals?
Between them, the big four largest of Australia’s banks issue more than two-thirds of the cards used in this country. Commonwealth Bank, Westpac, ANZ, and National Australia Bank all offer a wide selection of cards with all kinds of reward schemes, interest rates, charges and special features.
Below we will focus on these cards to see what the big four bring to the table.
National Australia Bank (NAB)
NAB offers a fairly standard range of cards with some of the best rates and benefits, but of special interest are the NAB Qantas Gold Card, ideal for those wanting airline rewards. There is the added advantage of it being two cards connected to the same account allowing you a choice of either MasterCard or Visa, and the second card being American Express.
This gives the widest possible worldwide acceptance for any single credit card account. NAB also offers the NAB Velocity Card, which gives 44 days interest free on purchases, and the velocity airline rewards program which gives a wide range of reward redemption options.
Westpac
Westpac has the widest range of cards available among the big four with over twelve different cards to choose from. They offer certain specialised cards such as a student visa card optimised for students, and a card issued in association with Singapore Airlines.
For great credit card rewards schemes, Westpac has a range called the Altitude Cards and another called the Earth credit cards. Westpac’s credit card reward scheme has won awards, and although all the cards offer slightly different specific schemes, they are all widely recognised as excellent.
On top of their specialised cards, Westpac offers the most frills-free standard low fee and low interest rate cards, such as their 55 day Visa range. If you just need a card for convenience, then this might be the right card for you.
Commonwealth Bank
CBA is the largest card provider of the four. Their range is not as vast as Westpac but they do focus on offering extremely competitive rates, fees and rewards. They offer a standard, gold and platinum credit card all connected to their own rewards scheme, and you can link two cards to the same account, allowing maximum reward points earnings.
ANZ
ANZ is the second largest card provider of the four. Their First Visa card is a good all-round everyday card, and their Balance Visa card is an unusual and innovative card that allows you to earn reward points by paying off your balance as well as making purchases.
The ANZ Rewards and Rewards Gold cards give you access also to the bank’s reward scheme, and they offer three different cards with focus on the Qantas frequent flyer scheme.
